PAY GAP

Women face obstacles as wage-earners. Although pay discrimination is illegal, It’s often justified by experience, education, seniority, and other allowed exceptions.

Women working full-time, year-round earn 83 cents for every dollar white men working full-time, year round earn.

All women, compared to all men, regardless of hours or weeks worked annually, earn 73 cents for every dollar men earn.

At the current rate of progress, the gender pay gap will not close until 2111.

By losing 17 cents to the dollar, women stand to lose $10,435 a year. This loss is the average equivalent cost to 9 months of rent, 13 months of groceries, or a years’ worth of childcare.

There are several strategies that could be implemented at the company, state, and national level in order to narrow the gap. They could also result in more equitable working conditions and fair, transparent pay structures for all workers, regardless of gender.

Increase pay transparency to help determine whether or not compensation is fair

Stop basing employee pay on salary history, which can justify low pay and perpetuate a cycle of unequal pay.
